Chlorella: The Miracle Food from the Sea

We all know how important it is to eat right and exercise to live long, healthy lives. But too often, our good intentions fall by the wayside – usually somewhere between getting through the workday, caring for the kids, cooking dinner, running errands and the thousand other things we do each week.

Don’t you wish it could be a little easier to fit a healthy lifestyle into your schedule?

Chlorella can help. This natural nutrient derived from single-cell algae has the highest chlorophyll content of any type of food, and for those of us who sometimes don’t get our five servings of fruits and veggies a day, just three grams of chlorella tablets is roughly equivalent to a the nutrients you’d get in serving of vegetables.

Now more and more research is showing that it can not only help make up for nutritional shortfalls, it can actually help you live longer and healthier by:

Increasing your energy: If you’re feeling pooped, you’re not alone! Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond showed that 47% of women who suffered from the extreme fatigue of fibromyalgia got relief and improved their ability to function in everyday activities by 20% in just 30 days of taking 10 grams of chlorella.

Chlorella has the highest chlorophyll content of any known food – 5 to 10 times as much as in spirulina, barley or wheat grass. This is a huge boost to your energy because chlorophyll has been scientifically proven to cleanse the bowel, kidneys, liver and bloodstream, helping eliminate energy-sapping toxins from your body.

Chlorella molecules work like hemoglobin molecules, to help build red blood cell count and control calcium levels in your body.

This single cell algae has existed genetically unchanged for 2 billion years. It reproduces four times a day. We don’t know what it is, but something drives this tiny creatures to survive and this research suggests it may be passing on its endurance to drive to us.

Protecting you from summer stomach disasters: Japanese studies show that chlorella boosts immunity and can wipe out listeria and e coli bacteria. Since we’re approaching prime time for food poisoning, that makes chlorella especially important now. Japanese animal studies show that animals given deadly doses of e coli bacteria were able to clear their systems completely with chlorella. In a Brazilian animal study, 55% of the subjects were able to wipe out the powerful listeria virus that can cause meningitis and even death.

That’s because chlorella seems to latch on to toxins of all kinds, including heavy metals (including mercury) and even the less-than-healthy things we sometimes add to our diets. Planning on your occasional junk food indulgence? Take 3 grams of chlorella beforehand and enjoy without worrying about damaging your health.

Shielding you from serious diseases: Cancer researchers at the University of Hawaii and Oregon State University have found that chlorophyllin, one of chlorella’s active ingredients, neutralizes cancer-causing amines in grilled meats, like those burgers you’re throwing on your barbecue as the weather warms. Amines have been associated with breast and colon cancer. Other research shows chlorella stops the production of aflatoxin B, a powerful cause of cancer, and is particularly protective against liver cancer. It has also been shown to minimize the side effects of radiation therapy in cancer patients.

What’s more, research from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond shows patients with high blood pressure were actually able to stop taking their medication when they used chlorella for two months – and have a 25% reduction in blood pressure in the bargain!

The blood pressure lowering mechanism may be due to chlorella’s high content of Omega-3 fatty acids and alpha lipoic acid, experts say. And if that’s not enough, Japanese researchers found taking six grams of chlorella a day lowered LDL or “bad” total cholesterol by an astounding 51 points in just three months!

Slowing the aging process: Some research suggests that people who take multivitamins may live longer, but chlorella may be even better. Lab studies show every 3 grams of chlorella supplies you with 23 vitamins and minerals, 19 amino acids, plus Omega-3 fatty acids and alpha linoleic acid. Studies show chlorella helps prevent cognitive decline in patients with brain cancer and one Japanese study shows a daily dose of chlorella increased the lifespan of lab animals by 30%.

Researchers theorize that chlorella works largely through the chlorella growth factor (CGF) by giving you a high dose of disease-preventing antioxidants and nucleic acids that stimulate the immune system, promote healthy cell growth and heal and maybe even prevent the cell deterioration that comes with aging.

Plus, Japanese research has sown chlorella helps promote the growth of “warrior” cells (B-cells, T-cells and macrophages) that protect the immune system.

How to take it

Start slowly at a rate of 2 to 3 grams a day and if you’re not getting noticeable results in a month or two, increase your dosage up to 10 grams a day.

WebMD.com advises consumers to be aware that chlorella products can vary significantly depending on the way “the crop” used to make them was cultivated, harvested, and processed. Investigators have found that dried preparation of chlorella can contain from 7% to 88% protein, 6% to 38% carbohydrate, and 7% to 75% fat.
