easy steps for a healthy sustainable dietButter is good for you. No, butter is full of saturated fat and it’s bad for you.

Eggs are a perfect food. No, eggs have too much cholesterol, so they’re bad for you.

Low-carb is the only sensible diet. No, low-carb diets result in too much protein intake and insufficient carbs from vegetables and fruit.

Are you confused? You’re not alone. There are a million different diet permutations around today, each more confusing than the last. Each one claims to have “science” to validate it, which may or may not be true.

I admit, I have been confused enough in recent years that I am tempted to resort to the bacon double cheeseburger, chocolate cake diet. Yet, I won’t give in. There are simple ways to choose the best and healthiest diet without being overwhelmed.

When you add the argument against foods poisoned by GMOs and RoundUp, the confusion becomes almost overwhelming.

Here’s simple primer on what to eat and what not to eat. It may not be the be-all and end-all, but it will give you a basic structure.

  1. Eat a wide combination of fresh, unprocessed foods.
  2. Buy organic as much as possible.
  3. Eat loads of fresh vegetables and two servings of fruit a day.
  4. If your budget won’t permit a completely organic fruit and veggie shopping list, use this rule of thumb: If you are going to eat the whole veg or fruit, go organic. This especially includes lettuce.
  5. Eggs are good!
  6. So is butter. Margarine is terrible.
  7. Sugar makes you fat. That includes honey and “natural” sugars like agave.
  8. Stevia is good.
  9. Meat is OK—especially if it is organic.
  10. Fish is good as long as it is wild caught.
  11. Dairy products are OK in small quantities.
  12. Obtain most of your essential fat intake from healthy oils, including organic extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, walnut oil, almond oil and other nut oils.
  13. Avoid all soy products. Almost without exception they are GMO.
  14. Grains must be whole grains, organic if possible.
  15. Bread: Make your own with King Arthur organic flour. All others are made for wheat dried with RoundUp and have added toxic bromine.
