Superfoods from the Garden

If you have read my book, Food is Medicine: 101 Prescriptions from the Garden, you probably noticed asuperfoods from the garden theme running through it: Certain foods are mentioned over and over, to prevent and treat diseases and maladies that are vastly different.

That’s because these foods are superfoods, ones that are so dense in nutrients that they address a broad range of nutritional needs.

There is a large body of research that shows – in my mind proves—that the healthiest and longest-lived humans are those who eat the most fruits and vegetables.

Superfoods multiply those health benefits untold numbers of times. I can’t emphasize enough the value of superfoods. It’s so great that if you eat just a serving of each of these foods every day, I can assure you that your life will be healthier and longer.

Here’s my super list in the general order of their importance, in my purely subjective opinion:
1. Garlic for allergies, memory loss, asthma, bronchitis, burns, fibromyalgia, colds and flu, wounds, depression, high blood pressure and more
2. Onions to fight inflammation, the underlying cause of a wide variety of serous diseases including cancer, diabetessuperfoods from the garden and heart disease, for infections, diabetes, immune system function, constipation, obesity, gallstone and kidney stones.
3. Spinach for alcoholism, memory loss, anemia, anxiety, body odor, bone loss, celiac disease, eyesight deterioration, headache, congestive heart failure and more.
4. Blueberries for acne, anxiety, bladder and urinary tract infections, bruises, cervical and ovarian cysts, stress, kidney stones and more.
5. Tomatoes for asthma, eyesight deterioration, dehydration, cold sores, celiac disease, periodontal disease, migraines, congestive heart failure and more.
6. Beans, dried for stress, anxiety, anemia, arthritis, blood sugar control, bone loss, constipation, depression, diabetes, diverticulitis and more.
7. Broccoli for adrenal fatigue, arthritis, cancer prevention, chronic fatigue, gum disease, stroke prevention and more.
8. Apples for allergies, appetite control, burns, constipation, Crohn’s disease, heartburn and more.
9. Potatoes for anemia, appetite control, blood sugar control, bone loss, celiac disease, colitis, emnphysema, diarrhea and more.
10. Pumpkin/pumpkin seeds for appetite control, cancer prevention, carpal tunnel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, hearing loss, atherosclerosis, ADHD and more.

It’s easy to add these to your diet this time of years. Keep them in your diet and live long and prosper. (My apologies to the late great Leonard Nimoy!)
