Beat holiday stress. Start with the small stuff.

We’re headed into the holiday season already. Can you feel it? I sure can. The rush is already upon us.

Every year, I make a pledge to minimize the stress of the holiday season with mixed results.

I don’t mean to stress you even more, but the health-destroying effects of long-term stress are just about the worst thing you can do to yourself.

That means stopping the stress cycle now.

As you read this, I am on my way to a life-altering spiritual journey in Peru. I won’t arrive home until just before Thanksgiving—so I’ve made an executive decision: There will be no family Thanksgiving gathering at our house this year. My blood pressure rises when I even think about getting home, unpacking, doing laundry, trying to get the house cleaned, shopping done and cooking for a crowd? Nooooo.

There is a nearby restaurant that has an excellent Thanksgiving buffet. That’s where we will be this year.

I know I have to give myself that one little gift. I hope everybody understands.

And as all of us head into the sacred season, maybe we can take some time to pause and think about what is really important.

We can take a little reflective and healing time alone.

We can gets lots of stress-relieving exercise.

We can remember to breathe.

We can get lots of sleep, those lovely long winter’s naps.

And have gentle sharing time with friends and family.
