Big Box Retailers are Phasing out Neonicontinoids

I’ve written several times over the years about these bee-killing chemicals:phasing out nicotinoids

Finally, there’s some movement in the right direction.

There’s great news on the garden front this spring, especially if you buy plants for your garden or patio: This spring nearly 140 Big Box retailers are phasing out or even eliminating bee-destroying neonicotinoid pesticides.

These big plant sellers, including Lowe’s, Home Depot, Walmart and Ace Hardware have committed to eliminate the bee killing pesticides often called “neonics.”

Bees are the backbone of our food system because they pollinate almost all fruits and buts. . Yet they have been dying at alarming rate. Forty percent of our invertebrate pollinators are on the brink of extinction. Global surveys have concluded that the world’s insect species could become extinct, largely due to the use of neonics and other pesticides used in mega-agriculture, forecasting the “collapse of nature’s ecosystems.”
