A presidential executive order now protects herbicide producers from lawsuits brought by consumers injured by glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp weed killer.
Putting the battle line directly between the president’s desire to protect huge corporations from expensive lawsuits and the MAHA (Make America Healthy Again) movement spearheaded by Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Trump’s Secretary of Health of Human Services, leaves ordinary consumers in the lurch.
As I wrote a month ago, I am enraged by the politicization of health care and specifically the politicization of natural health. I’m even more enraged that a proven health-destroying weedkiller now protects huge corporations on spurious “national security” grounds.
The order protects producers and grants them “immunity” against lawsuits based on glyphosate’s well-documented health risks.
Backing up for just a moment:
Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the world. In the United States, it is used to kill weeds in virtually all food crops. It is also frequently used to desiccate (dry out) wheat crops to make harvesting easier. Non-organic farmers use it to dry out crops like wheat, oats and beans, causing high chemical residues in food. While the use of glyphosate is prohibited for use in organic crops, wind drift frequently contaminates them as well.
Sadly, glyphosate is everywhere in our food and on our bodies.
Carcinogenic: In 2015, The World Health Organization (WHO), from which the United States has now officially withdrawn, classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”
WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that there is “sufficient” evidence for the carcinogenicity of “pure” glyphosate in experimental animals and “limited” evidence in humans, especially workers (including landscapers) who have regular exposure.,
Probably the most compelling evidence on the toxicity of glyphosate is a 2019 review of previous studies that concluded, “Our current meta-analysis of human epidemiological studies suggests a compelling link between exposures to GBHs (glyphosate-based herbicides) and increased risk for NHL (non- Hodgkins lymphoma).
A 2019 CNN report noted: …the chemical has triggered multiple lawsuits from people who believe that exposure to the herbicide caused their non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. In 2017, CNN reported that more than 800 people were suing Monsanto (the originator of the RoundUp product, now owned by Bayer); by the following year, that figure was in the thousands.
Ongoing research, including a 2025 review from the Global Glyphosate Study, continue to support the 2015 findings linking glyphosate exposure to various cancers.
Genotoxic: The IARC also determined there is “strong” evidence that glyphosate and its formulations are genotoxic (can damage DNA).
The IARC also determined there is “strong” evidence that glyphosate and its formulations are genotoxic (can damage DNA).
Hormone disruptor: Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are widely considered potential endocrine disruptors that can interfere with hormone systems and reproductive health.
While some US regulatory bodies (the Environmental Protection Agency And have not classified glyphosate as a endocrine disruptor, similar to its stance on the herbicide’s cancer-causing properties, numerous independent studies indicate it can alter steroid hormone production, impair sperm quality, and disrupt reproductive functions.
Ground water contamination: There is ample evidence, including documentation from the US government that glyphosate contaminates ground water, particularly in rural wells where the herbicide may be used on crops in adjacent fields. There is also limited evidence that it has contaminated municipal water systems.
Conclusion: So what does this mean?
First, it’s incontrovertible evidence that the US government favors business over the well-being of its people. If there are questions whatsoever, and here there are certainly conflicting scientific findings about glyphosate’s safety, bias should always be on the side of caution.
Second, as consumers our best option is to refuse to buy RoundUp or any other herbicide that contains glyphosate. Speak your reasons to clerks at stores that sell the products. I promise they will pass it on to their bosses and information will go up the food chain (pun intended).
